Anesthesia

Anesthesia is a medication that keeps you comfortable and makes you sleep during surgery. There are four main categories of anesthesia used during surgery and other procedures: general, regional, sedation (MAC) and local anesthesia.

Sometimes patient may choose which type of anesthesia will be used, the anesthesiologist will discuss the types of anesthesia that would be safe and appropriate for the operation they need and will explain their options clearly.

General Anesthesia:

During general anesthesia, you are unconscious and you will be completely asleep, have no awareness, sensations and pain. Many different medications may be used during general anesthesia. Gases and vapors are given through a breathing tube or a mask.  Some medications are given through the IV to induce sleep, relax muscles and treat pain.

Regional Anesthesia:

Makes an area of the body numb to prevent the patient from feeling pain. It can completely block sensation to the area of the body that requires surgery. Two types of regional anesthesia: SPINAL and EPIDURAL. Sometimes an epidural catheter is left in place to allow continuous pain relief to be given for one or more days after surgery.

Nerve blocks are another type of regional anesthesia that can provide pain relief to a smaller area, such as an arm or leg.

Sedation (MAC):

Also known as (monitored anesthesia care) is what people have often referred to as (TWILIGHT). Medication are given usually through on IV, to make the patient feel drowsy and relaxed.

Local Anesthesia:

A term used for medications such as lidocaine that are injected through a needle to numb a small area. It is often used with sedation during minor outpatient surgery. At the end of many operations, the surgeon may inject local anesthesia to provide additional pain relief during recovery.

Anesthesia types

One –day surgery:

It is the procedures that need local anesthesia with or without sedation as blepharo plasty, revision of scars. The patient can discharge from hospital after 2-4 hours .

Minor Surgery:

It is the procedures that need general anesthesia as rhino plasty, breast augmentation and mini liposuction .the patient can discharge in the same day or the next day of operation.

Major Surgery:

It is the procedure that need general anesthesia as liposuction, body contour ,Mastopexy, tummy tuck and face lift the patients need to stay in hospital for several days for monitoring and give them IV serums and medication.

*all previous procedures need sterile operation room consist of an anesthesia devices to monitor the blood pressure, heart rate and breath.
